when we first met with jess & matt, they let us know that they were local business owners as well and opening a bar in Nob Hill called Fat Franks. they immediately knew that it was ----the---- spot for their engagement photos. we immediately got panning and finding inspo for their 70's themed bar engagement shoot. after a couple delays caused the shoot dates to be pushed back, we decided that not only would we shoot at Fat Franks when it opened, we'd help get them some engagement photos to share asap!
these two pivoted immediately and started dreaming up an entirely different direction for the shoot with us. we toyed around with a few location ideas like jemez springs, somewhere a little more north and green, but ultimately ended up deciding on white sands national park. we had never had the opportunity to shoot with a couple at white sands, so we were over the moon excited when jess & matt chose it as their location! we were immediately inspired by the landscape and had so much fun dreaming up this engagement shoot with them : )
after a couple weeks of planning outfits and inspo for the shoot, we drove down from abq and met jess & matt at white sands national park. first, we started out with an all black dress on jess and a dual tone outfit on matt. ugh we looooove the contrast of the black dress on the white sand and the super blue sky. jess & matt immediately got into it and were running around and dancing in the sand dunes. it was literally unreeeeeeal. if we've said it once, we've said a million times. when it comes to the vibes of your photos, location is absolutely paramount! the perfect venue, whether it's for your wedding or your engagement photos, IS your vibe! that's what made these photos so soooo special.
okayyyy before I forget to mention, there were 40 mph gusts at white sands that day! it was insane and the sand was seriously flying everywhere. jess & matt couldn't even hear us yelling directions over the sound of the breeze! it was actuallllly incredible though because the wind caused the sand to be completely smooth behind jess & matt. meaning there were no marks from anyone walking around. if you look at normal white sands photos, you always see other's footsteps in the sand. the wind on this day, though, caused those footprints to be completely covered, making the dunes sooooo smooth like an untouched desert. like, the sand is not photoshopped in these pictures it just actually looked that smooth that day! we loooooved the texture the wind added and were just blown away with each picture we were taking of this incredible landscape. all four of us were freaking out the entire shoot after the lighting and the landscape just got better and better. we have seriously obsessed over these golden hour photos since we shot them!
also we just have to have to hand it to jess & matt again, they looked incredible in all of that insane wind! we think that the weather helped out sooooo much in the final look and we're secretly hoping it's a little breezy the next time we get to shoot here🤞🏻
after their first outfit, the two wore an all-white linen-y look that was just mhuaaaa 🤌🏻 we played a little music as the sun went down and they slow danced and popped a bottle of champagne as the sun set over the mountains. the sand turned golden and a subtle blue came out of the shadows and made the colors soooo pleasing. this was easily easily one of the best sunsets we've ever been able to shoot under. the haze from all the white sand in the air made such a soft light on jess & matt and truly turned these photos magical. we both agree that the 3 and a half hour drive from albuquerque to white sands national park was absolutely worth these photos, and we can't wait to get even more with jess & matt at Fat Franks soon!
